The Story Behind Those Adorable Ears

Every extraordinary breed has a story. For the Scottish Fold, it all began with one remarkable little barn cat named Susie.

In 1961, on a quiet farm near Coupar Angus in Perthshire, Scotland, shepherd William Ross discovered Susie, a beautiful white barn cat with something he had never seen before, distinctive ears that folded forward and gently downward, giving her an unmistakably sweet and enchanting expression, creating the unique look that would eventually become the hallmark of the breed.

Intrigued and fascinated by this rare, and naturally occurring genetic trait, William Ross, together with geneticist Pat Turner, began a selective breeding program to carefully study, preserve and establish this extraordinary distinctive characteristic.

Susie’s daughter, Snooks, inherited her mother’s signature folded ears and became an important foundation cat in the development of the breed.

Through thoughtful and responsible breeding practices and strategic outcrossing with British Shorthairs and American Shorthairs, the Scottish Fold began to take shape.

This development relied on strict pairing rules, specifically never breeding two Folds together, but instead pairing a Fold only to a Straight to protect the cats' health. A protocol responsible breeders still follow today alongside thorough DNA health Screening. At Bindi Dolls Cattery, we proudly uphold to these established standards and procedures as part of our commitment to responsible and ethical breeding.

Early Scottish Folds were sometimes referred to as “Lops” or “Lop-ears,” inspired by the lop-eared rabbit, whose ears naturally fold downward.

Scottish Folds are sweet natured, calm, and deeply affectionate cats, with gentle personalities making them wonderful companions. They form close bonds with their humans and love being part of family life, happily staying nearby without being overly demanding. Their easy going nature also makes them generally well suited to families with children and other household pets. Scottish Folds are known for their quiet and peaceful personality. Rather than persistent meowing, they tend to communicate through soft chirps, subtle sounds and expressive body language, making them relaxed little felines.

Features & Traits

Scottish Folds are instantly recognisable for their signature folded ears, one of the breed’s most distinctive features. The Scottish Fold is renowned for its famous owl-like appearance and sweet, gentle expressions. Their round, broad heads and large, wide open eyes give them a beautifully expressive look, while their short noses have a gentle curve to complement the contours of their round face, creating a soft and utterly heart melting expression. Scottish Folds have an overall rounded, silhouette with well padded bodies that give them a soft and cuddly appearance. Their medium to long tails should be flexible, and well proportioned to the body. Just like the Scottish Straight, Scottish Folds also come in a wide range of colours and patterns, and can have either short or long hair. All Scottish Fold kittens are born with straight ears, with the characteristic fold developing at around 3–4 weeks of age. Smaller, tightly folded ears that sit forward and down toward the head are particularly desirable, especially on the show bench. Scottish Fold ears can develop into single, double, or triple folds, with each degree creating a different level of folded appearance.

The Scottish folds are famous for their almost human like postures, from the curious little “meerkat” stand to their quirky but cute “Buddha sit", these are definitely some of the unique traits that our Mr Prince is renowned for!
