Origin

The British Shorthair is one of Britain’s oldest and most treasured cat breeds, with a history that dates back to Roman times.  Originally valued as hardy working cats and skilled mousers, over generations, they developed sturdy, muscular bodies and dense weather-resistant coats

suited to Britain’s harsh climate, physical traits that define the breed today. By the late 19th century, British breeders began refining and showing these cats, helping establish the British Shorthair as a much loved and recognised Pedigree breed.

The British Shorthair has a sweet, gentle and easygoing nature. They are even-tempered making them wonderful family cats.

They have a lovely balance of affection and independence, forming strong, loving bonds with their families while still enjoying their own space. Calm and relaxed by nature, with moderate energy levels, the British Shorthair is often happiest lounging peacefully by the window or quietly taking in everything happening around the home. They still have their playful moments too, with the occasional zoomie or burst of excitement as they chase after their favourite toys.

The British Shorthair is known as the “teddy bear" of the cat world, and it’s easy to see why!  With their round faces, chubby cheeks, plush coats, and sturdy build, British Shorthairs have an irresistibly cuddly look. British Shorthairs have a dense, plush double coat that stands away from the body, with an incredibly crisp and velvety feel, with more fur per square inch than almost any other cat breed. They are best known for the classic solid “British Blue” but British Shorthairs come in many colours and patterns with even longhaired varieties known as British Longhairs. The chubby faced British Shorthair is believed to have inspired the Cheshire Cat from Alice in Wonderland and is also associated with the famous Puss in Boots.

The Great Lap Cat Debate: Are British Shorthairs lap cats?

Well… that depends on who you ask, and more importantly, which British Shorthair you ask!

British Shorthairs are wonderfully affectionate without being demanding. You may find your little teddy bear curled up beside you on the sofa, or sitting close by with a gentle purr, simply enjoying your company. They make exceptional companion cats, always happy to be near their favourite people. Some, like our Madonna, take their affection one step further and become the ultimate “dog cat,” happily following you from room to room because, quite simply, wherever you are is where they want to be.

And then there are the exceptions…

Some British Shorthairs absolutely love a good lap and will happily settle in for a cosy cuddle session. Our little Miss Pebbles is one of those girls. The moment she sees you, she simply must be on your lap, or better yet, being carried around like the little baby she truly believes she is!

Then there are the more independent Brits who will give you a dignified little stare, and decide that the chair beside you or end of the bed is far more appropriate.

And that’s part of the charm of the British Shorthair. Every cat has their own unique personality, but they’re all affectionate and loving towards their humans, each with their own special way of showing their loyalty and love.
